Janice Ann (Colburn) Johnson was born on March 21, 1935, in Britton, SD, to Arthur and Harriet (Phillips) Colburn. She grew up and graduated from high school in Havana, ND. On April 25, 1954, she was united in marriage to Joseph Johnson in Havana. The couple moved to Cottonwood in 1960 where they owned and operated the Johnson Meat Market until Joe’s death in 1981. Janice then worked for the Schwan Food Company for a time and later managed the Cottonwood Municipal Liquor Store for over a decade, retiring in 1998. In 1991, she was married to Wilfred “Slick” Kockelman. Slick died in January, 2012. Janice was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. She enjoyed knitting and created many baby baptism blankets. She was most passionate about her family and greatly enjoyed following all of their activities. She was a longtime member of the Cottonwood American Legion Auxiliary and Christ Lutheran Church.
After a few years of declining health, Janice died on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She is survived by her children Doug “Fudge” Johnson of Minneapolis, Deb (and John) Van Maldeghem of Cottonwood, David (and Kathy) Johnson of Cottonwood, Don Johnson of Cottonwood, Dee (and Dave) Kerkvliet of Cottonwood, Daryl “Butch” Johnson of Arlington, TX, grandchildren Ann (and Jim) Orren, Tara (and Adam) Balding, Jinny (and Pat) Fricke, Brenton Johnson, Tessa (and Chad) Johnson, Kendra (and Chris) Stevens, Mandy (and Cory) Juhl, Mally (and Damian) Javens, great-grandchildren Landyn, Kinley, Maddox, Teagan, Jaida, Peyton, Jonah, Finn, Evie, Laia, Ledgen, Lawe, special cousins Gordy and Jean, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Joe and Slick and brother Don.
